SHIPPING A VEHICLE TO THE UNITED KINGDOM CAN BE A CONFUSING PROCESS FOR THE FIRST-TIMER, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO CUSTOMS AND QUARANTINE.
Do you need to steam clean your seats? Disinfect the interior? What about pet hair and dirty glove boxes? Successful vehicle shipping requires thorough planning and research. So in this article, discuss some of the quarantine regulations and cleaning requirements for shipping a car from Australia to the UK.
Understanding and preparing for the risks associated with international shipping may mean the difference between receiving a substantial fine and a delayed departure date, or ‘smooth sailing’ and hassle-free travel.
Step 1: Remove everything*
First and foremost, you should make sure that your car is completely empty — that means ensuring that all of the loose items in your boot, glove box, cup holders, ash trays, door compartments, cd containers and console are removed. No umbrellas, first aid kits or emergency sewing kits!
Step 2: Check for ‘quarantine risk material’ (QRM)
Some of the basic items your vehicle will be checked for during quarantine include:
— cobwebs and insects
— leaves, hay and plant material
— seeds, grass clippings, and soil
— wood chippings and timber
— food scraps and waste (fruits, vegetables and nuts)
— pet hair and animal fur
— agricultural containers and tanks
Step 3: Clean inside and out
To make sure that your vehicle is cleaned to a satisfactory standard for entry into the UK you should clean underneath your wheel arches and/or mud flaps, your front grill, in and around the radiator, your windscreen wipers, seats and seat covers, floor and floor mats, your boot, glove box, engine, and tyres (including the spare). If you have a ute or an agricultural vehicle, you should also make sure that your tray, any built-in toolboxes and water tanks are empty and scrubbed clean. If you have a pet (or messy kids with scrubby hands) it’s also a good idea to wipe down/disinfect the interior and steam clean the carpet/seats.
*When transporting your car in a container (as opposed to roll-on/roll-off) we allow items to be transported both inside the car and the container. So once you’re car has been thoroughly cleaned, feel free to include personal items you want to bring with you.
