Hi [name]

Thanks for the opportunity to be able to quote on the movement of your vehicle.

You have two different options when shipping your vehicle. The first and most popular option is roll on, roll off... This is where the vehicle is driven aboard the vessel and lashed to the deck for its journey. This option is much cheaper, although you cannot put any personal belongings in with the vehicle.

The second option is to load and lash the vehicle inside its own 20ft container – when choosing this option you can fill the vehicle with any personal effects or parts you wish to ship across as well...

For info on each type of shipping, please check out our guide here.

This is where the vehicle is driven aboard the vessel and lashed to the deck for its journey. This option is much cheaper, although you cannot put any personal belongings in with the vehicle.

The second option we can offer is a shared 40ft container, this option gives you the ability to load personal items, tools etc within the vehicle / tray and costs are much less than using a 20ft container by yourself.

There are two different ways in which we can move your vehicle across to Ireland.

The cheapest option is via a ‘Roll on, Roll off’ service, where your vehicle is driven into one of the enclosed inner decks of the vessel and strapped to the ground for shipping, this method is the cheapest way of moving the vehicle across to Ireland however the downside is that you cannot send any personal items along with the vehicle. If you would like to learn more about how roll on, roll off shipping works then please check out the following article - http://www.willship.com.au/roll-on-roll-off-shipping.

The second option is to load and lash the vehicle inside a 20ft container. This method is a little more expensive than Roll on, Roll off however you are able to fill the vehicle and the space around the container with some personal items. If you would like to get a better idea on the space available inside a 20ft container then please have a look at the following article - http://www.willship.com.au/how-much-space-is-in-a-container.

Thanks for the opportunity to be able to quote on the movement of your motorcycle.

In the same way as the majority cars are transported around the world, motorcycles can also be shipped on a select number of RoRo vessels that run between Australia and New Zealand.

Motorcycles shipped in this manner are simply ridden on to the vessel and lashed to the deck in an area on the vessel designated specifically for motorcycles. All motorcycles shipped via RoRo are lashed to the floor in one of the many fully enclosed decks to ensure the bike remains protected from the elements during shipment.

If you would like to see what the inside of a RoRo vessel looks like, please have a look at the following article - Roll on Roll off Shipping.

If you are happy with the quote and want to proceed, your first step will be to select a suitable sailing. The current Australia to New Zealand Sailing Schedule can be viewed by clicking on the following link – Roll on Roll off Shipping Schedule .

Secondly, we can also offer to pack and lash the bike inside one of our ‘shared’ containers that we move across to Auckland roughly once a week. This method of shipping means that no one will ride your bike throughout the shipping process, and we can even ship non running bikes. This method is slightly cheaper however costs are based on you dropping to our depot, and collecting at the other end, you will also need to be a little more flexible with timing if you wish to ship inside a shared container.

On top of the above pricing you will need to factor in several other costs to get an overall figure for the journey across. You will need to decide whether or not you want to take out transit insurance. On top of the above pricing you will need to factor in several other costs to get an overall figure for the journey across. You will need to decide whether or not you want to take out transit insurance. You will need to determine if you will be charged any taxes from Australian Customs upon entry of your vehicle into Australia and you will need to factor in your on road costs in order to get an overall total for the move.

Information on each of these steps below.

1. Transit Insurance
Transit insurance is completely optional but always recommended, this will cover the vehicle in the event of damage or loss at any point in the transit. We can arrange on your behalf, the rate for most vehicle is 1.25% of the value, you are able to allocate your own value to the vehicle , and minimum policy is NZD 350.00. Excess is NZD 560.00.
For more information about why transit insurance is important, please see this article.
2. NZ Import Taxes and Duties
2. AU Import Taxes and Duties
  • 1) That you have lived outside the EC for at least 12 months
  • 2) That you have possessed and used the vehicle outside the EC for at least 6 months
  • 3) That you are moving to the EC to live for at least 6 months in the following 12 months
  • 4) That the vehicle arrives no more than 6 months after you arrive
  • 5) That you do not sell the car for at least 12 months after UK customs clearance

If you do not meet the above criteria then please contact us and we can provide you with more info on the local taxes.

We have a great set up between Australia and NZ and many people are eligible for GST exemption, meaning you pay NO taxes on import. In general if you meet below criteria you will be successful in exemption.

  • Be a first time immigrant or a returning New Zealand citizen.
  • If a returning citizen, you must have been out of New Zealand for over 21 months.
  • Be prepared to sign a deed where you agree not to sell the vehicle for at least 2 years.
  • You must have personally owned and used the vehicle for at least 12 months before the date of your departure to NZ, or the date on which the vehicle is surrendered for shipping – whichever is earlier.
  • You MUST be physically in New Zealand in order to claim exemption.

...and you must provide the following documents:

  • Proof of ownership over the last 12 months
  • Purchase receipt for the motorcycle or a current NZ valuation from a local dealer

If you do not meet the above criteria then please contact us and we can provide you with more info on the local taxes.

If you do not meet the above criteria, customs GST will be applicable, this is 15% of the ‘landed value’ of the Motorcycle (value + freight + insurance) – I can provide you with more information on how the value is calculated if necessary.

In order for us to export your vehicle to Australia from New Zealand you will need to obtain a Vehicle Import Approval or VIA, Please visit https://infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/imports/ and follow the instructions on applying for a VIA there is a AUD $50.00 fee for this approval process, Once you have your VIA we can book a sailing for you.

  • If the vehicle was originally exported from Australia and is now returning then it will not be subject to import tax.
  • If the vehicle has recently been purchased for the purpose of import, then it will be subject to both import duty of 5% of the purchase price (not applicable if the vehicle is over 30 years old) and import GST of 10% of it’s landed value (purchase price + freight + duty).
  • If the vehicle is worth more than AUD 66,331.00 then it will also be subject to luxury car tax, which is 33% of every dollar above this value. The Australian government sure don’t miss you when it comes to import tax!
  • If the vehicle is a personal import (you have owned and used it for in excess of 12 months in NZ prior to import) then it will need to be valued for Australian customs entry purposes, the cost of the valuation is an additional AUD 300.00 and then we will use this value to calculate your import duty and GST.

If you do not meet the above criteria then please contact us and we can provide you with more info on the local taxes.

Australia has comprehensive laws to control the importation of vehicles that may contain Asbestos. This is more of a worry for older cars most modern cars do not have any Asbestos in the brake pads or Gasket seals however we require a declaration from you that there is not Asbestos in your vehicle.

3. Compliance and Registration
3. Getting a Vehicle on the Road in Australia

Once the vehicle has cleared customs, it will need to undergo compliance and registration for use on NZ roads. This is a fairly simple process that we have outlined it in this article.

There are many different compliance depots in Auckland, your best bet is to simply google ‘Vehicle Compliance ’ and find one nearby to your final destination so it’s easy for you to collect the vehicle upon completion.

Cost is generally around NZD 450.00 + GST for a standard Australian vehicle as long as no work is needed, this would be payable directly to your chosen compliance depot.

The compliance depot will then issue you with a ‘certificate of compliance’ and a ‘warrant of fitness’ and from there your final step is to head to a NZTA branch where you be able to register the vehicle, obtain your number plates and then you can head back to the compliance depot, they can assist in attaching the plates for you and then you drive away all done and dusted.

Registration costs vary depending on the age and model of the vehicle, but general range between NZD 135.00 and NZD 190.00.

You will also need to double check with the compliance depot that your vehicle will meet NZ emissions standards, further information on this on the following link –
Class and Standards

Note: You should do this BEFORE you ship your vehicle, in the rare case that you don’t meet emissions exemptions criteria, or your vehicle does NOT meet emissions exemptions criteria, or your vehicle does NOT meet emissions standards, you will not be able to register the vehicle in NZ so best to always check first.

Any local mechanical workshop / NZTA will be able to assist you in completing a Warrant of Fitness on the trailer. We include delivery within 20km of the destination port so as long as you choose one within this limit we can deliver it directly there from the port so you can get this completed, get the trailer registered and tow it away.

We include delivery within 20km of your chosen destination so we can deliver the Caravan / Camper Trailer to any workshop of your choosing within this area.

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION

On top of the above pricing you will need to factor in several other costs to get an overall figure for the journey across. You will need to decide whether or not you want to take out transit insurance. You will need to determine if you will be eligible for UK VAT exemption and you will need to factor in your compliance and registration costs in order to get an overall total for the move.
Information on each of these steps below..
    1. Transit Insurance
Transit insurance is completely optional but always recommended, this will cover the vehicle in the event of damage or loss at any point in the transit. We can arrange on your behalf, the rate for most vehicles is 1.25% of the value, you are able to allocate your own value to the vehicle, and minimum policy is NZD 350.00. Excess is NZD 500.00.
For more information about why transit insurance is important, please see this article.
    2. UK IMPORT TAXES AND DUTIES

We have a great set up between Australia and the UK and many people are eligible for duty and VAT exemption, meaning you pay NO taxes on import. In general if you meet below criteria you will be successful in exemption

    3. Compliance and Registration

If the vehicle is more than 10 years old, no compliance work is necessary, the vehicle simply needs to pass an MOT test and then you can register and drive the vehicle.

If the vehicle is less than 10 years old, then it will need to undergo full compliance, this generally totals around GBP 1260.00 including 12 months UK registration, This price includes transport costs ex Southampton port to our recommended compliance depot in Milton Keynes although excludes any repair or modification charges necessary to pass the IVA compliance test.

Most vehicles from Australia are compliant, other than we usually have to:

    1) Fit a replacement speedometer face indicating MPH (Miles per Hour) - Pricing varies between around 75.00 and 325.00 GBP.

    2) Fit a rear fog-light to the UK off-side, approximately 155.00 GBP if required.

    3) Remove any window tint on the driver and front passenger windows and the windscreen, around 85.00 GBP if required.

    4) Remove and replace any bull-bars or tow-bar, Pricing depend on the labour time.

It's always difficult to provide exact pricing on compliance as every make and model varies but the above price will provide a good guideline, if you would like firm pricing based on your vehicle specifics please just contact us and we can quote you accordingly

If Milton Keynes is a bit far out of the way you are welcome to use any other compliance facility in the UK, you are under no obligation to use our compliance service. Simply let us know who you want to use and we will work with them directly to move your vehicle there once its cleared through UK customs.

We work with an excellent team in the UK for both customs clearance and compliance, we would be happy to put you in touch with them directly if you have any questions regarding the clearance process for either option.
