TARGA TASMANIA

TARGA TASMANIA IS ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S MOST WELL-KNOWN RACING EVENTS.

The annual race covers 2000 kms of Tasmanian country-side, split over 40 competitive stages. Next year, Targa Tasmania 2016, will mark its 25th Anniversary. If you’ve not been before, it’s the perfect opportunity to watch the world’s best drivers race everything from vintage and classic cars, to the latest GT and showroom sportscars.

If you went to last years race you would have seen the White Hot team of Jason and John White race to victory in their white Lamborghini Gallardo Squadra Corse. The event ran in nearly perfect conditions, and if you were following it closely, the team thrillingly won the competitive timed event by a mere 26 seconds.

The popularity of Targa Tasmania is due to there being something for everyone. Open to the public as well as professionals, it’s one of the few chances you’ll get to rub shoulders with Australia’s and the world’s racing elite. Or take a short holiday as you follow the rally across the scenic countryside as you spectate in one of the world’s most popular tarmac rallies.

The top classes challenge professional racers to compete in the TSD (Time – Speed – Distance) trophy. And this could be anything from GT, custom or showroom racing cars, to the more iconic classic sports cars. You’ll also see some real vintage entrants tearing up the track, with a category for cars built between 1900 and 1946.

But don’t think you have to just watch. To experience the thrill of competitive rally racing you can register for the Tour category. You’ll be racing in ‘Special Stages’ that follow the same course as the competitive race. And while the Tour stages must abide by the sign-posted speed limits, throwing your car around those streets at the legal speed limit is still likely to put a smile on your face. Just don’t put your pride and joy into a ditch!

Of course, if you’re just looking for a weekend away, why not head across the Tasman for a weekend to the beautiful ‘Apple Isle’ as a fan and spectator of arguably world’s toughest tarmac rally.
