Hillclimbing – what is it and how to get involved

IF YOU ARE A MOTOR ENTHUSIAST THEN YOU MAY BE AWARE OF THE TRADITIONAL HILLCLIMBING RACE. IF NOT, THEN THAT’S OK – YOU’RE ABOUT TO FIND OUT ABOUT THIS AUSSIE-LOVED MOTORSPORT!

If you’re from Brisbane you may already be familiar or heard of the recent Mt Cootha Classic back in September. All roads around Mt Cootha were closed for one reason, and one reason only – A Hillclimb race.

The Hillclimb is the oldest form of competitive motorsport where a single car on the track races against the clock to get the best time against other competitors. Some hills are totally dedicated to car hillclimbing events, whereas others are just recreational hills that get closed off for the day as we saw with the recent Mt Cootha Classic.

Hillclimbs cater for almost any vehicle. From classic sports cars to recent modified four-cylinder machines. Hillclimbs are an event for almost any sport-modified vehicle. As mentioned, part of the skill in hillclimbing is to drive the car as quickly as possible – a task made harder without the opportunity of the tyres and brakes to warm up.

As we saw with the local Mt Cootha Classic, most states conduct a championship for hillclimbing every year, and the entry age requirement starts at just 14 years of age. However, to participate in competitive hill climbs you must hold a Level 2 license.

For more information on upcoming Hillclimbing or racing events check out the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport website or see their video here.
